After making a bid for Shaun Wright Phillips, the Blues have moved a step closer to securing a promising midfielder.

His name is Lassana Diarra and he is regarded in some quarters within the French game as the new Claude Makelele.

A deal has been agreed with the 20-year-old, who has made a positive impression on Jose Mourinho, though a transfer fee has yet to be finalised. The youngster has impressed many, including French outfit Nantes, although he has been playing in the Second Division.

It is very much an investment for the future. The Blues had been watching the Paris born midfielder, who can also play at the back, in the U20 Toulon tournament. Should he join the Stamford Bridge outift as expected, he may well be loaned out to gain Premiership experience.

8173_news Essien: Lyon Will Let Me Join Chelsea
7/16/2005 10:26:00 AM
Lyon’s sought-after midfielder Michael Essien maintains that club president Jean-Michel Aulas has assured him they will allow him to join Chelsea at the right price.
Aulas has publicly insisted that Essien is not for sale, but the Ghanaian midfielder claims that is not his private view.

Essien told The Sun newspaper: "I know directors of both clubs are to see each other again in the next few days.

"I have the chairman’s word that he will do everything to find an agreement with Chelsea as soon as possible."

Essien, 22, was sent off in Lyon’s draw with Colombian side Once Caldas in the Peace Cup in South Korea on Friday.

He has been the subject of £17 million and £18 million bids from Chelsea so far this summer, but Lyon are believed to be holding out for £30 million, leaving Essien frustrated.

"I did not take part in the talks. It’s up to the two clubs now to agree. I have made my choice. I want to go to Chelsea," he added.

"I have made my directors understand I can no longer stay at Lyon. My decision is firm and definitive.

"The chairman knows he can’t keep a player against his will. He and manager Gerard Houllier understand that."
